The Vice-Presidents will match students based on subjects and when they can meet. We will try to find tutors for all students who need them as quickly as possible but in some instances this may not be possible. Matching students takes at least one week and continues throughout the year. We encourage students to be tutored in the advisory room of the teacher/subject for which they are being tutored.

What is typically referred to as the Newtonian Threshold is 60% (18 correct). This indicates a general understanding of Newtonian Physics. Are you there?

new numbering on Calendar

Starting with the classes after December Break, I have started using a different numbering system for the classes on the calendar. This won't really matter for most of you but I wanted to make you aware of it so you are not confused.

In the past, I just numbered the classes for planning purposes. Now, I am going to separate them by unit and class number in the unit. For example, if it is Unit 6 and the 3rd class of that unit, you will see "class 6-3" on the calendar and the usual details for HW, etc. listed. Again, this is not really going to affect anything on your end, but I wanted to make you aware of the change.

GHS is considering offering some Physics Contests to students if interested. There are two such contests coming up. There are awards and also the possiblility to advance to further competition. This would be a great opportunity to showcase your individual and also group talents (also a great "resume builder"), and also to showcase the talents of GHS on a larger stage. Please consider participating.

If you are interesting in participating in these opportunities, please see Mr. Piscitelli, Math/Science/Tech Supervisor in his office. He will keep track of those interested and coordinate registration. If enough are interested, we will hold these events.

About the Contest

· Essays will be assessed on imagination, creativity, scientific content, literary style, clarity, and organization by a team of (i) high school teachers with expertise in the sciences, literature, and the arts, .and (ii) scientists associated with the New York Center for Astrobiology.

Imagine a terrestrial-type planet orbiting within the habitable zone of a star. This planet has a thick, cloudy atmosphere that completely fills the sky, except for breaks in the clouds that occur about once every 400 years. When a break does occur, it is short-lived and reveals only a small area of the sky. Describe the culture and value system that might exist within a civilization on this planet that has rarely, if ever, seen celestial objects, such as stars and planets.

Imagine a double-star system where each star has an inhabited, terrestrial-type planet within its habitable zone. One of those planets has developed an Apollo-like technology. When the orbits of those two planets bring them close enough for a launch opportunity, a mission is launched. Describe the mission and its first encounter between the habitants of these two planets. Assume that one planet has twice the mass of the other planet.

For this contest, please use the following definitions:

Terrestrial-type planet: A planet having a bulk density of 5.0 grams/cm³, and having a radius within the range of 0.8 to 1.8 Earth.

Habitable zone: The distance from a star where an orbiting planet with sufficient mass and atmosphere could have liquid water on its surface. Sometimes the habitable zone is also called the Goldilocks zone.

Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP)

Thank you for your interest in the Union College Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP). STEP was established in 1985 by the NYS Legislature to prepare historically underrepresented students in the sciences or economically disadvantaged students in grades 7 - 12 for entry into postsecondary degree programs in scientific, technical, health-related, and licensed professions. Since 1996, Union College has been awarded the STEP grant by the NYS Dept. of Education to establish collaborative relationships local schools.

Through Union College's STEP program, Schenectady area school students receive high-quality instruction in math, science and technology from Union College faculty, staff, students and other presenters. Union College hosts twelve (12) Saturday sessions comprised of academic workshops and local field trips during the academic year, and a three-week intensive research-based program in the summer. All program resources and activities are offered at no cost to the participants.

To be considered for acceptance STEP at Union College, students must meet the following requirements:

Must be a New York State resident

Must be in 7^th – 12^th grade (for Summer STEP, you must be entering 7^th – 12^th grade the following fall)

Member of a historically under represented ethnic group (as defined by the New York State Department of Education): African American, Latino/Hispanic or Native American/Alaskan Native. If you are not a member of one of these ethnic groups, you can qualify based on economic need (see attached Income Eligibility Criteria chart).

Show a demonstrated interest in math and/or science, indicated in the essay

Have an average grade of C+ or greater in both math and science courses, indicated on current report card. Students must be passing all of their subjects. (This is a new requirement for applicants starting in Academic Year 2009/10 or later.)

the videos below are from an old children's television program in Canada called eureka. In Canada in the 70's and 80's they would show these 5 minute short cartoons in much the same way there was Schoolshouse Rock in the US. These cartoons would show in between other shows on Saturday mornings, etc. The difference is that Eureka is all about Physics and Schoolshouse Rock is mostly English and Social Studies. Please check out (in order) the 3 videos below. They explain some of Newton's Laws - the topic we are studying right now.

I am still playing around with the settings and haven't figured out a minimum score method yet... so, we will do it the same as last time - 5 points extra credit on the test for completion with a score that represents your full effort (not random answer picking) on the assignment.
